GOVERNMENTS URGED TO BOOST FUNDING AND STRENGTHEN CONTROL OVER IMMUNISATION PROGRAMMES

The World Health Organization’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has called on countries to take stronger ownership of their immunization programmes by increasing funding and improving management.

According to SAGE, growing political instability, reduced health budgets, and shifting government priorities are threatening the stability of vaccination systems worldwide. These pressures, combined with a widening “trust crisis,” are weakening public confidence in vaccines and slowing uptake, leaving populations vulnerable to preventable disease outbreaks.

The experts stressed that long-term success in vaccination campaigns cannot rely solely on international partners. Instead, governments must commit sustainable resources, prioritize immunisation in national health agendas, and build resilient systems that ensure every child and adult has access to life-saving vaccines.

SAGE concluded by emphasizing that vaccines remain one of the most powerful tools in public health, saving millions of lives each year. Restoring public trust, securing stable financing, and strengthening national leadership are essential steps to protect global health progress and prevent a reversal of hard-won gains.
