A new study from Spain reveals that a low-calorie ketogenic diet may do more than just help with weight loss—it could actually reverse aging at the cellular level.
The study followed individuals with obesity who adopted a strict ketogenic diet for 180 days. Remarkably, their biological age, measured by epigenetic markers, dropped by an average of 6.2 years. Even more impressive, after just 30 days on the diet, participants showed a 6.1-year reversal in biological age.
THE LINK BETWEEN OBESITY, HEALTHY WEIGHT, AND AGING
Researchers compared people with healthy weight ranges to those with obesity. They found that obesity accelerated biological aging by about 4.4 years, while maintaining a healthy weight slowed aging by 3.1 years.
THE SECRET INGREDIENT: KETONES
The key factor? A compound called beta-hydroxybutyrate—produced by the body during ketosis—was strongly linked to this age-reversal effect. In addition to its anti-aging potential, the ketogenic diet also improved glucose and insulin levels, which are vital for preventing and managing diabetes.
EXPERTS URGE CAUTION
While the findings are promising, medical experts advise caution. According to Dr. Mir Ali, a bariatric surgeon at MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center, “Any weight loss that brings an individual into a healthy range improves health and longevity. It’s still unclear whether the keto diet itself offers unique anti-aging benefits beyond the effects of weight loss.”
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR HEALTH
This new evidence opens the door to further exploring how diet—especially ketogenic plans—can influence not just how we look, but how our bodies function at the molecular level.
